RESEARCH THE PROGRAMS

You should check before all else to see if your specialty goes through ERAS the "Electronic Residency Application Services" which is a way of submitting and tracking your application through the internet. Most programs in the USA are shifting to ERAS and in here you fill out a single common application which gets transmitted to all the programs you are applying to on a PC. You could get more ERAS info at their main website. Meanwhile you can also inquire about purchasing the ERAS software at::
ECFMG/ERAS PROGRAM
PO Box 13467
Philadelphia, PA 19101-3467 USA
Tel# 215-386-5900
For procedural questions for IMGs go to ERAS FAQs or for more information at ERAS INFO. You can also find out about the details for ERAS 2000 by clicking here. Request forms will be available on April 1999.
APPLICATION:
ERAS costs $240 dollars for 30 programs and $30 dollars each program above thirty. Therefore when you apply "Where You Apply" should be once of the first things that you research since you dont' want to apply to a place which will not even consider you.At this point your goal should be to get as many interviews as you can to
ensure a good matching percentage. Some websites you can use to research programs are the AMA website
FREIDA ONLINE. or the ONLINE GREENBOOK. You can also order the print version of the Greenbook here:
AMA
Order Dept OP416795
PO Box 109050
Chicago, IL 60610-9050
Tel# 1-800-621-8335
Another source you should take a look at is the list of unfilled programs in the past since they will most likely be receptive towards IMGs:

RESEARCH THE PROGRAMS

TIPS ON HOW TO CHOOSE PROGRAMS:

1. Start early, the earlier you start applying the better your chances of getting an interview. As early as July .

2. Apply to as many as you can, remember the more you apply the better your chances of being matched!

3. Choose those programs which have a history of taking graduates from your school, some programs are more prone to accept applicants when they know the quality of the medical school graduates from you school. Ask around or use the internet by using the links to this website. Log on to the resident's page in the program's homepage there is usually a list of past and current residents there.

4. Ask around if they have residents who are foreign grads, if there are chances are they will consider your application especially if they have one from your own school.

5. Gather as much info about the program of your choice as you can. through the internet, friends, or classmates
